Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at employees who work with sewer work, in wells, pumping stations, or other confined spaces where dangerous gases or oxygen deficiency can occur. This includes those carrying out tasks related to sewer work, wastewater, and pumping stations, as well as employees working in confined spaces more broadly, where gas risks are rarely visible to the naked eye. What will your employees learn?

The course provides concrete skills employees can put to use the same day they finish. They’ll learn to identify dangerous gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), carbon monoxide (CO), and explosive gases, and gain insight into how the different sensor types in a gas detector work in practice. The course also covers correct mounting and daily use of both portable and stationary detectors.

A large part of the course focuses on the routines that often get overlooked: bump testing, calibration, and daily visual inspection. Without these routines, a detector risks showing incorrect readings exactly when it matters most. The course also covers the Lone Worker function and how it contributes to personal safety when an employee works alone. Finally, participants get a theoretical introduction to fire and explosion theory and the basic properties of gases, so the course covers not just practical handling but also why the procedures look the way they do.

The course is built as e-learning, so your employees can take it whenever it fits their workday. It takes around 40 minutes to complete.

Once you’ve completed the course, you automatically receive your certificate by email. The certificate can be printed and kept as documentation of your skills.

How long is the certificate valid?
Your certificate is valid for one year from the date of issue.

What is gas detection?
Gas detection is the measurement and monitoring of dangerous gases in the air using a gas detector. In sewer work and work in confined spaces, gas detection is used to catch toxic, asphyxiating, and explosive gases before they become dangerous to the worker.

Why is gas detection important in sewer work?
In sewers and wells, dangerous gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), carbon monoxide (CO), and methane (CH₄) can build up. These gases can be invisible and odorless, and can lead to poisoning, oxygen deficiency, or explosion. Accurate gas measurement and a reliable detector are therefore essential for safety.

What is a bump test?
A bump test is a quick functional test of a gas detector. The detector is briefly exposed to a known gas to confirm that the sensors and alarms respond correctly. A bump test ensures the gas detector is working before work begins.

What’s the difference between a bump test and calibration?
A bump test checks whether the gas detector responds correctly to gas. Calibration adjusts the sensors’ reference point so the detector measures accurately and displays correct gas levels.

How often should a gas detector be tested?
A gas detector should be bump-tested before use and regularly beyond that, according to your own procedures.
